This
series of 8 photographs was taken during a trip to Asbury Park,
NJ in June of 1998. I was the staff photographer on a nationwide
demonstration tour of the language ‘Equus’ (the language
of horses). After helping to set up the demonstration I had free
time, so I grabbed my Hasselblad camera and went exploring the Convention
Hall. Surrounding the upper two thirds of the building is a large
hallway -with near floor to ceiling windows. I wandered this hallway
and was intrigued by the years of weathering that the ocean atmosphere
had placed on the walls. It seemed, as a quick fix for this wear
and tear, that year after year paint was applied and reapplied over
the old. When I was there, the building and the town were just emerging
from years of neglect. That is when, captivated, I photographed
the series of images you see here. I can only imagine the people
and sounds that these layers of paint have witnessed over the years.
Each image is unique on its own accord: A glimpse into the past,
a moment captured in time, and a story that only you can see.
